Our Legacy
Symbiosis was founded in 1971 by visionary educationist Dr. S. B. Mujumdar, with the noble mission of providing a “home away from home” to international students pursuing higher education in India. Over the last five decades, Symbiosis has grown into a prestigious family of 43 academic institutions, offering education from Kindergarten to Post- Graduation across a wide range of disciplines. Living true to its name—a botanical term meaning “living together for mutual benefit”—Symbiosis has become a symbol of inclusivity, academic excellence, and cultural harmony. Today, Symbiosis is ranked among the top education providers in India, recognized both nationally and internationally. For his unparalleled contribution to education and society, Dr. Mujumdar has been honored with the Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan awards by the President of India.
Leadership in Skill-Based Education
Under the dynamic leadership of Prof. Dr. Swati Mujumdar, Pro-Chancellor of Symbiosis, the university has emerged as a pioneering force in skill development and applied sciences. A trailblazer in vocational education, Prof. Mujumdar has spearheaded the creation of India’s first residential skill universities. With her extensive global experience and a Ph.D. in Skill Development, she has reimagined higher education to align with evolving industry needs, innovation, and employability. Her mission is clear: “To empower students with practical skills, industry exposure, and entrepreneurial mindset that lead to gainful employment and innovation.”
Symbiosis Open Education Society (SOES)
Symbiosis Open Education Society (SOES) was established to promote vocational, skill-based education and open & distance learning. SOES has four constituent units under its aegis – Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL), Symbiosis Vocational Junior College, Symbiosis Community College and Symbiosis Institute of Skill Development. SCDL was established in 1994 with the objective of “Reaching the Unreached”.
To extend its reach in vocational and skill-based education, Symbiosis established the Symbiosis Open Education Society (SOES). Under its aegis are four pioneering institutions:
1. Symbiosis Centre for Distance Learning (SCDL) – founded in 1994 to “reach theunreached”.
2. Symbiosis Vocational Junior College
3. Symbiosis Community College
4. Symbiosis Institute of Skill Development
Through these, Symbiosis has empowered lakhs of learners by providing flexible, inclusive, and employment-oriented education.
