Bachelor of Fine Arts
The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music is a comprehensive program in performance and production in the fields of Popular Music. Our guiding principle is that current practices in music education in these areas have to form a strong connection between the expertise of creative music making (be it compositional, improvisational or by means of media music); a convincing performance ability; and the attuned knowledge of possible distribution channels in the current, yet ever-changing music market. In adhering to this multi-faceted ethos, our Students are encouraged to make the most of the interdisciplinary curriculum of Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences.
The objective of this program is to produce graduates who, as musicians and music-makers, have the varied qualifications of the current professional realities in the area of Popular Music. In order to guide their individual talents and areas of specialization, a sense of expertise is achieved, which in turn guarantees their employability in the dynamic competition of the music market: Professional craftsmanship in their respective Main Artistic Subject (MAS), the ability to independently and intuitively develop artistic concepts as well as their skill in performance, production and distribution. Within the framework of music production, specialized professional targets receive particular focus in addition to composition and production techniques of the various fields of applied media music: film music, theatre music, advertising music, audio branding and sound design, as well as music for computer games. Expertise in the scientific research and reflection of creative processes, as well as a high degree of social and communicative competence are further central values integral to such a successful degree.
The program offers a wide range of specializations, prominent among them are:
- Keyboard Instruments – Piano, Accordion
- TAK – Theory/Arrangement/Composition
- String Instruments – Violin, Guitar, Bass (Double Bass/E-Bass), Harp
- Wind Instruments – Flute, Saxophone, Trumpet, Trombone, Tuba, Chromatic Harmonica
- Percussion Instruments – Drums, Vibraphone and Mallet Instruments
- Media Music
Training in the above field will equip the students with the required skills for the contemporary music industry. Apart from that the students will be required to undergo industrial internships of 4-6 months in various production houses. This will make the students ready for their job and freelance career in the industry.
The nature of the program is such that in most of the courses the student has to practice the art either individually or in a group/team for example solo vocal or instrumental performance or orchestra, including chorus. Lectures cum demonstrations sessions of leading artists and performers will be arranged to give exposure to the students to the contemporary art. This will also give them an opportunity to learn directly from the maestros.
The students will be required to undergo training in leading production houses and philharmonic groups for a duration of 4-6 months for gaining hands on experience of various aspects of performance, production, composition and improvisation.
As musicians, graduates have the best professional qualifications and skills for a wide range of professional activities in the field of popular music, as well as in the diverse forms of applied music. They can work as soloists and/or as ensemble members in various musical formations and orchestras, theatre, music shows, TV shows, films, etc. Alternatively the students can form their own band or musical groups to work as freelance performers.
This unique and exciting program combines comprehensive actor training with the development of theatre skills in directing, writing and devising performance. The program aims at grooming talented actors and theatre professionals.
The program curricula include a wide range of theory and practicals, reinterpreting existing repertoire and creating original works. Working effectively as an ensemble in a respectful and supportive environment forms a key part of the training. Therefore, selection for this program will be done through audition as well as interview.
As part of an ensemble of versatile creative practitioners, the students will be able to produce a variety of work such as plays, musical theatre, dance, physical theatre and scenography.
Creative collaboration and networking are integral to the program, giving students opportunities to work with fellow students, academia and industry professionals The program provides the perfect blend between screen and stage, preparing students with the techniques, knowledge and experience to launch a fantastic performance career after graduation.
Students will be immersed in a balanced and stimulating program of study of acting and performance, integrating theoretical and critical analysis and receiving up-to-date contemporary actors’ training alongside building essential skills, such as audition and interview techniques – ready to step up to the challenges of the industry. Optional modules also enable them to specialize in areas such as directing, teaching or applied theatre, broadening career pathways further.
Working effectively as an ensemble in a respectful and supportive environment forms a key part of training. Our approach towards ‘actor cultivation’ highlights the uniqueness of each performer as conditioned by imaginary circumstances. Students will also have the chance to explore physical, political, applied, ritual and post-dramatic methodologies as they progress.
During the program students will have access to flexible performance spaces with lighting and sound equipment, a dance studio and rehearsal rooms, and professional theatre venues beyond the University.
Students will learn from industry professionals who operate across a wide variety of creative roles including directing, movement directing, musical directing, playwriting, composing, choreographing, devising and acting/performing as well as in theatrical and supporting business and technical roles.
Dialogue between students, industry and academia is the hallmark of the program, and we will facilitate the development of creative partnerships both within and outside of the University in order to create new knowledge, produce new work and generate career opportunities.
The broad nature of this degree prepares students for a career as an actor/performer for stage, screen or radio as well as director/producer.
