One Day Skills Conclave on Changing Canvas of BFSI Industry post Pandemic Era
On 13th may 2021 School of Banking, Financial Services and Insurance Management organized a One Day Skills Conclave on Changing Canvas of Banking, Financial Services and Insurance Industry post Pandemic Era. The conclave started with Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Charudatta Pathak introducing to the audience Hon’ble Chancellor of Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences Professor (Dr) S.B. Mujumdar. Hon’ble Chancellor sir gave the welcome speech where he made us aware about how the present pandemic created havoc all over the world and how important it is to safeguard ourselves from this.
After that Hon’ble Pro-Chancellor, Dr Swati Mujumdar welcomed all the dignitaries on behalf of entire Symbiosis University of Applied Sciences fraternity. She introduced SUAS to the audience, being the first skill university established in 2016, which aims to impart relevant knowledge and skill training. It started with BBA-BFSI, BBA-RM, MBA-BFSI, B. Tech.-CSIT and Mechatronics. Its latest offerings are BBA – Digital Media Marketing, BBA-Supply Chain Management and MBA – Marketing. Successful placement of 2 batches and provision of great experience with internships is one of the few highlights that she enlightened everyone with. She also mentioned that a lot of students have started their entrepreneurship journeys after graduating form here. Interventions from experts enhance the learning of students and therefore she extended her humble gratitude for everyone for organizing this wonderful conclave.
Later Dr Navdeep Barwal, Director School of BFSIM introduced the school to the audience, mentioning that it is one of the key schools of SUAS. He informed the audience that school is at present running MBA (BFSI), BBA (BFSI) and B. Com. (H) programs. In coming times few more courses would be introduced by the school. He extended his warm welcome to all the delegates contributing in this conclave from different corners of the globe, to all the esteemed panellist, faculty members and students for this conclave. He later introduced everyone with the objective of this one day conclave and narrated the agenda for the day.
Inaugural address was given by Mr. Anupam Chakraborty, Head HR, Bank of America, Global Services. He talked about how the pandemic has affected our lives. He also shared his story which aptly explains that life is not a walk-in park. He shared many skills which would help in making our professional lives easier. Some of which were coding, articulating relevant information quickly, ability in thinking, empathy for an inclusive workplace, risk management, collaborative approach, and many more. At the end of the session, Dr. Navdeep Barwal on the behalf of students asked various questions posted in the chat box from the speaker.
Later Mr Amish Dedhia (Director, PwC India), keynote speaker of the conclave, shared valuable insights into investment banking. He discussed what Investment banking is all about and what key skill sets are required to be developed by the students in order to enter in this area. Later he answered a lot of questions of students regarding the topic.
Post Lunch there were two expert sessions. First session was taken by Mr. Abhitabh Dixit (regional head, ICICI Bank). He discussed his thoughts on “Future skills required in banking sector in the wake of privatization”. He started with his session with the history of Indian banking industry where he discussed how people ventured into the private sector to get specialized services. He discussed few skill sets which as per him are required in the current and coming period. Q&A session was very informative.
2nd Expert session was taken by Mr. Yogesh Kumar (GM, IFFCO Tokio General Insurance). He briefed the audience about the impact of the pandemic on our lives and on the insurance industry. He mentioned about observance of growth in certain insurance segments like Health Insurance where as some segments showed declining demand like Fire Insurance. Health insurance reached the peak of demand amidst the pandemic times. With increasing demand, insurance sector has a bright future. He ended his speech by answering to all the questions on an effective note.
Conclave was then followed by a Panel Discussion on the topic “Recent Reforms in Capital Market by SEBI”. Panellists were Mr Mihirsinh Parmar (CEO, Skillspire), Mr Sushil Alewa (Trader and Investment Advisor) and Dr Shubhra Anand (MD, Finmore Investment Advisor). The panel discussion was moderated by Dr. Navdeep Barwal (Director SBFSIM). Various panellist one by one discussed about the topic in brief. Key points of the panel discussion included how finance became organized and transactions gained confidentiality. People can now apply for IPO and no advance payments are needed. Retail investors can get interest from banks and apply for bank guarantee as well. To prevent manipulation of investors during POA transfers, minimum 25% liquidity is mandatory. Dr. Shubhra explained how mutual fund is a great industry for cumulative returns and these days many people are exploring this sector. She aptly summarized the scenario of Indian equity markets. Mr. Mihirsinh shared his valuable insights on dynamic nature of financial world. He shared how SEBI is introducing ATF funds and various new products such as ETFs, Real estate investment trust etc. Later the session was opened to questions from students. Students got answers of their queries from different panelists.
At the end there was a workshop on “Stock Trading” by Dr Priya Agrawal (senior consultant and social entrepreneur). She effectively shared her words of wisdom on Indian stock markets. She enlisted the do’s and don’ts of equity trading. She explained how important it is to find the right company and right timing for succeeding in the equity arena. The students were very curious to know about the various strategies and implementations in stock market and therefore asked many questions to which they got all the answers.
Finally, the Conclave ended by a Vote of Thanks by our Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Dr. Charudatta Pathak. He expressed sincere gratitude to our Hon’ble chancellor Prof. (Dr.) S.B. Mujumdar, Pro-chancellor Dr. Swati Mujumdar for their constant support and encouragement. Finally he thanked all faculty members of SBFSIM and all support staff who helped in the execution of the conclave.
